Jan 16, 2025
New Year Energy Cleansing

Welcome everyone to a New Year full of magic, possibilities, and journeys to be had!

The New Year offers a natural opportunity to embark on what awaits us with renewed energy, healthy perspectives, and a rejuvenated mind, body, and spirit.

In this blog, we’re going to talk about setting healthy intentions for the new year, starting with how to cleanse your energy, how to practice gratitude in your daily life, how to create cleansing rituals, how to practice mindful movement, and much more! After reading this blog, you will hopefully be able to look at the world with a fresh perspective and make the positive changes you’re looking for!

Why Does Energy Cleansing Matter

Cleansing your energy is a beneficial part of a daily self-care routine, important for maintaining balance in our physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Just like we clean our bodies and homes, our energetic field also requires great attention and care (Judith, Anodea, 2004).

When left uncleansed, trapped energy can manifest in many ways - physically, it can feel like tension, headaches, or a general feeling of exhaustion. Emotionally, it can trigger irritability, anxiety, and a sense of being disconnected from yourself and others. It’s like carrying invisible luggage that affects your whole being, including your mood, focus, and overall vitality.

And especially over time, we can accumulate stagnant and negative energy from stress, difficult experiences, and interactions with others. This buildup of unresolved emotions and energetic blockages can weigh us down, leading to feelings of heaviness, fatigue, being stuck in repetitive negative patterns, and even dis-ease.

By consciously cleansing your energy field, home, and living spaces, you can release all blockages and unwanted emotions, thus creating space for more positive, high-vibrational energy to flow freely (Linn, Denise, 2000).

Setting Intentions For The New Year With Renewed Energy

When you cleanse yourself energetically, you are not only releasing the old but also creating space for new opportunities, wishes coming true and personal growth. Energy cleansing is the perfect companion to setting intentions!

When your being is free from stagnation and heaviness, you can easily align with your newly set goals, dreams, and your heart’s deepest desires. Just like clearing clutter from your home makes space for the new, cleansing your energy creates room for fresh and high-vibrational energy to flow into your life and, ultimately, into the lives of others.

Even more, when you release all that unwanted emotional baggage, old patterns, and limiting beliefs, you open up to the potential of what you truly want to manifest. Whether cultivating better health, deepening relationships, or pursuing a new and successful career, the clarity you gain from energy cleansing will help you approach all your goals with renewed focus

By linking energy cleansing to goal setting, you also invite a more heart-centered approach to your personal growth. Instead of rushing into goals driven by external pressures or influence, you can set meaningful intentions that resonate with your heart. This intentional, energetically aligned approach allows you to grow in fulfilling and sustainable ways, supporting short-term achievements, long-term well-being, and the transformation you want!

A Reflection Practice

Emotional baggage is a crucial step in energy cleansing and starting fresh, as over time, we accumulate unresolved emotions and past experiences that weigh heavily on our well-being. These can be feelings of fear, frustration, anger, sadness, guilt, or disappointment that we’ve suppressed for a long time or never fully processed.

Carrying this emotional luggage affects your mental and emotional health and creates energetic blockages that prevent you from moving forward and being in the present. So, let’s take a few moments to reflect on past year’s events, experiences, and emotions you may have felt.

  • To begin releasing emotional baggage, identify what emotions or experiences are holding you back - take time to reflect on moments from the past year that triggered negative emotions or left you unsettled.
  • Ask yourself if there are unresolved conflicts, unmet expectations, or lingering feelings of regret you may still carry.
  • Once you’ve recognized the emotional baggage you’re holding on to, you can start letting go - this can involve writing down your feelings, talking to a trusted friend or family member, or engaging in practices like meditation, sound healing, or breathwork to clear the emotional energy.
  • Acknowledging and releasing your negative emotions creates space for healing and renewal so you can enter the new year with lighter energy, ready to embrace all the new opportunities and experiences waiting for you!

A Gratitude Practice

And now, let’s do the same reflection process, but with what you are grateful for that has happened in the last year, and even generally in your life. This is a great time to acknowledge lessons learned and what you’re deeply grateful for.

One of our favorite gratitude practices includes 3 steps:

  1. Take 5 minutes each morning or evening: find a quiet moment during the day where you can be left alone with your thoughts and emotions, preferably in a calm space, surrounded by nature, candles, incense, soft music, or anything else that brings you calm.
  2. Write down 7 things you’re grateful for (or more): these can be as small or big, such as a warm cup of coffee, an inspiring conversation you had, your home, family, a furry friend, etc.
  3. Allow yourself to feel the gratitude: as you write each thing you are grateful for, pause for a moment to really feel the appreciation and fet your emotions sink in, filling your mind and body.

This simple yet effective practice can help you shift your mindset from focusing on negatives to the positives in your life, no matter how small, whilst building a habit of recognizing gratitude and abundance daily (Emmons, Robert A., & McCullough, Michael E., 2003).

So why not share it with a loved one? We all need a reminder from time to time of what we’re grateful for!

Tip 1: Cleansing Rituals For Yourself, Your Home & Instruments

And we arrived at our favorite part - energy cleansing rituals, where we’re sharing with you our top 5:

  1. Smudging with sage or palo santo
  2. Salt baths
  3. Sound healing
  4. Crystals
  5. Visualization

1. Smudging With Sage Or Palo Santo

Sage smudging is an ancient practice used for energy cleansing from physical spaces and your personal energy field.

White sage is known for its powerful purifying properties, while palo santo (or “holy wood”) is known for its uplifting, sweet, calming fragrance. To smudge, light the sage or palo santo and allow the smoke to bathe your body, space, and healing instruments such as Tibetan singing bowls.

As the smoke rises, visualize it carrying away all stagnant energy, leaving a sense of lightness and tranquillity. This cleansing ritual is great for resetting your energy after a long day, before beginning any healing work, and as part of your self-care routine.

2. Salt Baths For Detoxing

Salt baths are a relaxing and deeply healing way to cleanse your physical body and your energetic field.

Bathing in Epsom salts or Himalayan salt helps to draw out toxins and dissolve any emotional or energetic stagnation. Salt is naturally grounding and has been used for purification for centuries. To create a detoxing and cleansing salt bath, dissolve a handful of salt into warm water and soak for up to 30 minutes. Add a few drops of essential oils like lavender, lemon, ylang-ylang, or bergamot to make it even more relaxing. As you bathe, imagine the water absorbing all your low-vibrational energy or stress from your body and mind, leaving you feeling rejuvenated.

3. Sound Healing

Sound healing is a highly effective way to cleanse your energy by using vibrational frequencies to break up blockages and restore balance (Leeds, Joshua, 2010).

Sound healing instruments like crystal singing bowls, tuning forks, and Native American-style flutes produce sound waves that resonate with the body’s energy field, helping to shift stagnant energy and promote a sense of harmony.

You can experience the benefits of sound healing by playing these instruments yourself, attending a sound bath, or a 1-2-1 sound healing session. If you want to find out more, you can read our blogs on The Power Of Self Healing Through Sound and The Therapeutic Effects Of Sound Healing.

4. Crystals

Using crystals for cleansing and clearing is cost-effective and easy (Simmons, Robert, & Ahsian, Naisha., 2015).

One of the most important things to remember when cleansing energy with crystals is to clean them before and after using them! To do so, you can smudge them with sage.

Selenite is the main crystal used in cleansing and clearing any unwanted energy. It is sensitive to sunlight, so it's better not to leave it under direct sunlight and avoid immersing it underwater as it’s not water-safe. With any contact with water, selenite will dissolve.

To cleanse your energy field, wear selenite as jewellery or carry a selenite stone in your pocket or handbag. To cleanse an instrument, place the selenite on or under it and leave it for at least twenty-four hours to allow total cleansing. When you remove the tool, ensure that you clear the crystal immediately.

And if you’re wondering how to cleanse your home of negative energy, you can place selenite clusters or selenite towers as the one in the picture above at the entrance of your home, in the kitchen, living room, and bedrooms to allow its cleansing energy to beam throughout your home.

5. Visualization

Visualization is a powerful, quick and easy way to cleanse yourself, your tools, special objects and your space. It can be done whenever you need to quickly cleanse your energy and restore peace in your mind, body, and spirit (Shakti Gawain, 2002).

  1. Find a quiet space where you can sit or lie down in a comfortable position, then close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to begin relaxing.
  2. Visualize a glowing and bright white light above your head, almost like a gentle, radiant ball of light.
  3. And then picture this white light slowly covering your body from head to toe; ss the light touches you, imagine it as a soft blanket of positive energy.
  4. As the light continues to flow through and around you, visualize it absorbing any negativity, stress, or tension you may be holding onto.
  5. Once you feel surrounded by this white light energy, imagine it forming a protective bubble around you, keeping you safe from negative influences.
  6. To end the visualization exercise, take a few more deep breaths, feeling renewed and energized, then gently open your eyes and return to your body and physical space.

A regular practice such as this can keep you feeling grounded, positive, and uplifted for long periods!

Tip 2: Practice Mindful Movement

Incorporating mindful movement in your self-care routine is a great way to release stored energy, leaving you feeling renewed and restored, ready to tackle a new year ahead! Our favorite mindful movement practices are:

  1. Yoga
  2. Breathwork
  3. Dancing or shaking

1. Yoga To Release Stored Energy

Gentle movement like yoga or stretching is a powerful way to release stored energy in the body.

Trapped stress can manifest in your body as physical tension, especially in the shoulders, neck, and hips. By engaging in mindful movement, you can create space for energy to flow freely, helping to release any blockages caused by negative emotional buildup.

When practicing yoga, you can focus on connecting breath with movement, promoting both physical flexibility and energetic balance. Poses such as child’s pose, forward fold, and twists are very effective in releasing tension and cleansing your energy field (Iyengar, B.K.S., 1979).

Even simpler stretches that target tight areas, such as the butterfly for the hips can activate the body’s natural ability to process and release stagnant energy, leaving you feeling more centered and balanced. And instead of practicing yoga in your living room, why not join a local yoga studio where you can meet new like-minded souls? You never know, what you need in the new year might be right around the corner!

2. Breathwork

Breathwork exercises, especially those rooted in pranayama (the ancient practice of breath control in yoga), are very effective for energy cleansing.

Conscious breathing helps clear emotional blockages, oxygenates the brain, and calms the nervous system. Techniques like deep belly breathing or alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana) can help regulate energy flow through the body, releasing stagnant or negative energy and renewing vitality.

For instance, with deep belly breathing, you inhale slowly through the nose, filling your belly with air, and exhale fully through the mouth, releasing tension with each breath. This mindful breathwork practice helps reset your energy system, promoting inner balance and clarity.

3. Dancing Or Shaking

Dancing is an incredibly liberating way to release stagnant energy.

When we engage in spontaneous, unstructured movement, we can shake off negativity and stress that may be stored in the body. Dancing to your favorite tunes can lift your mood and relieve emotional heaviness. There’s no need to follow any set routine - simply move in a natural and expressive way! As you let go of control and allow your body to flow freely, you can unlock areas of tension, shake off stagnant energy, and boost your overall sense of well-being while having fun! And doing it barefoot in nature is even better, so you can connect with Mother Earth, allowing its grounding energy to boost vitality!

Similarly, shaking is an ancient practice used in many cultures to clear energy and promote healing. Start by standing with your feet hip-width apart and gently shaking your arms, legs, and hips. Then, gradually build up the intensity, shaking more vigorously to release any tension you feel throughout your body.

After a few minutes, you can stop and take a few deep breaths, noticing how much lighter and more energized you feel. This simple yet powerful practice is excellent for resetting your energy, especially after a long or stressful day!

Tip 3: Prioritize Your Healing Journey By Starting Something New

Imagine yourself feeling motivated, light, excited, grateful, and with an inner knowing that you are on the right path towards the most abundant, confident, joyful and vibrant version of yourself.

Setting new intentions and welcoming fresh energy from starting something new can do just that and more for you! Starting a new practice, goal, hobby, or course is one of the most powerful ways to prioritize your healing journey

By embracing new experiences, you can welcome fresh energies into your life, helping clear out outdated patterns and make space for personal growth. By maintaining this sense of renewal, you can start taking heart-centered actions to invite the new opportunities you’ve been looking for into your life.

So now it’s the best time to set new intentions and take that first step into a new endeavour, which will signal to the Universe (and yourself) that you are committed to your healing and well-being!
