Journey Within: Discover The Power Of Inner Sound Meditation With ACEM
Mar 12, 2025
Introduction: The Inner Journey
Finding moments of stillness can feel like a true challenge in stressful everyday life. However, we all have the potential to experience deep relaxation simply and easily with an entirely natural method—enabling us to reflect, restore and recharge our batteries.
In this blog, we explore with neuroscientist Dr Svend Davanger the core principles of ACEM Meditation, its benefits, and how inner sound can become a bridge to self-discovery, personal growth, and profound calm.
What Is ACEM Meditation?
"ACEM Meditation is a nondirective technique where a simple, neutral meditation sound is repeated effortlessly with a free mental attitude.
Unlike many traditional forms of meditation that focus on concentration or mindfulness, ACEM encourages the mind to wander freely alongside the gentle repetition of sound, allowing unconscious thoughts and emotions to affect the meditation.
“This approach enhances relaxation, emotional processing, and self-awareness without requiring strict focus or discipline." ~ Dr Svend Davanger
What Is Sound Meditation & Its Benefits
Sound meditation has been scientifically proven to offer a wealth of benefits for both mental and emotional well-being.
Studies have shown that sound's calming effects can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve overall focus and concentration. When we tune into specific healing frequencies, our brains relax, releasing tension and inviting a deeper sense of calm (Tamara L. Goldsby, 2016).
What are the key benefits of the ACEM “inner sound” meditation regarding stress and anxiety reduction, emotional processing, and personal growth?
“ACEM meditation has been shown to lower stress and anxiety by reducing physiological arousal and increasing emotional resilience.
The effortless mental attitude allows unconscious thoughts and emotions to be processed gradually and gently, leading to deeper emotional processing and integration. Over time, practitioners report greater self-awareness, increased inner security and confidence, and enhanced personal growth, as meditation facilitates psychological insight and emotional flexibility.” ~ Dr Svend Davanger
How Sound Works: The Healing Power Of Vibrations
At the core of sound meditations lies the science of vibrations.
Every sound we hear is a wave of energy interacting with our body and mind. When we listen to calming sounds or specific frequencies, these vibrations create a ripple effect throughout our nervous system, encouraging relaxation and healing.
So, let’s dive deeper into the core concepts of ACEM Meditation with Dr. Svend Davanger to learn more!
How does the general repetition of a meditation sound with a free mental attitude stimulate the relaxation response and the default mode network?
“The effortless repetition of the meditation sound allows the autonomic nervous system to shift toward a parasympathetic state, promoting deep relaxation and reducing stress. At the same time, the default mode network (DMN), a brain network associated with self-referential thinking and mind-wandering, becomes more active in a spontaneous yet regulated way, fostering emotional processing and integration.
This dual effect helps the brain recover from stress while enhancing mental flexibility.”
Can you outline a few core concepts of the relaxation response and default mode network and reference scientific studies relevant to ACEM meditation?
“The relaxation response (Benson, The Relaxation Response, 1974) describes a physiological shift that counteracts stress and lowers heart rate, blood pressure, and cortisol levels.
The default mode network (DMN), identified through fMRI studies (Raichle, The Brain’s Default Mode Network, 2015), is active during introspective and self-referential thinking.
Research on nondirective meditation (Xu & Davanger, Nondirective Meditation Activates Default Mode Network…, 2014) suggests ACEM meditation enhances DMN activity more than focused-attention meditation, supporting relaxation and emotional processing.”
Can you share a personal story or testimonial from a practitioner who has experienced transformative results with ACEM meditation?
“One practitioner, a social worker who learned ACEM meditation in 2018, remembers feeling a lot of stress and demands from the outside, so her cousin recommended ACEM meditation.
He talked about how meaningful it was for him and how much of a coping strategy it was, enabling him to deal with life in general. She became curious and signed up for a beginner’s course!
She felt a great relief, only having to sit there and repeat the sound as gently as possible. She couldn’t imagine that this could be all there was to it! She now experiences being much more aware and in contact with her feelings and needs every day.
Meditation is the first thing she does in the morning, so she starts the day with more energy. She senses that she is more sensitive and capable of dealing with stressful situations. Sometimes, she realises she can see many more options in most situations!”
What tips or techniques do you recommend for incorporating ACEM meditation into daily practice for beginners?
“Beginners should set aside 20 to 30 minutes twice a day in a quiet, comfortable space, allowing the meditation sound to repeat effortlessly without trying to control thoughts.
Adopt a relaxed, accepting attitude - wandering thoughts are natural and part of the process. Consistency is key, so integrating meditation into existing routines (e.g., morning or evening practice) helps build a sustainable habit.”
How do you see the future of ACEM meditation evolving, particularly with the growing popularity of sound healing, sound baths, and audible sound meditation?
“With increasing interest in sound-based meditative practices, ACEM meditation stands out as a scientifically informed, psychologically nuanced approach to inner exploration.
While sound baths and audible sound healing focus on external sensory input, ACEM’s inner sound method provides a more individualized, deep-processing experience, which may appeal to those seeking long-term psychological and cognitive benefits. Future research and digital platforms could expand its reach to new audiences.”
What advice would you give someone looking to embark on a journey of self-discovery through ACEM meditation?
“Approach ACEM meditation with curiosity and patience, allowing thoughts and emotions to surface without judgment." ~ Dr Svend Davanger
Over time, you may notice shifts in emotional patterns, a deeper self-understanding, and an increased sense of inner calm. Seek guidance through meditation retreats, group sessions, or experienced instructors to enhance your practice and support your personal growth journey!”
